CLIMATE & EVENTS IN CAPE TOWN

CLIMATE

Summer - (November to March)

Long days with the sun only setting around 8:30pm, and day time temperatures in the mid twenties to early thirties. It hardly ever rains during this period, and the sun shines as only in Africa!

Autumn - (April to early June)

Sun sets between 7:30 and 6:30 as the days shorten. But this is the best time of the year with daytime temperatures still in the twenties. Calm, crystal days without wind and before the heavier rains. Safe sunbathing, followed by champagne on a beach with the setting sun! The weather can be variable with the odd front bringing rain, but these are short with glorious sun in between.

Winter - (late June to late August)

This is the season for storms in the Cape, but they only affect a few days out of each fortnight with wonderful weather in between. We are entering the coldest months now, but temperatures are still around 12 to 18 degrees centigrade during the day, so there is not much to complain about!

Spring - (September and October)

A profusion of wild flowers heralds the awakening of a new season. Morning dew is the last reminder of the Winter past, while Westerly storm winds give way to the Easterly Summer trades. Yachts, dinghies and wind surfers are out, as are those early Summer tans!
EVENTS
August

The wild flower season! Take a hire car and meander up North of Cape Town for an hour or two or even three. Yes, you will be stunned by the shear size of the carpet of flowers, stretching from Cape Town to the Orange River. The colours are amazing and all this in the most peaceful environment imaginable.

September

The official start of Spring, which lasts for all of a week (!) before Summer begins in earnest. Best time of the year for whale watching in False Bay, Hermanus and San Sebastian Bay. These are Southern Right whales which come all the way from Alaska to calve in our waters. Watch them cavort and suckle from the closest lookout points in the world.

October and November

A great time time to play golf in the Cape. Many of the clubs hold their open tournaments around this time. Enjoy the hospitality of our country clubs, including that great South African entertainment, the braai!

December to March

Sunbathe on the Cape's famous beaches, enjoy the open air, picnic concerts at the Kirstenbosch Gardens, Spier and the Oude Libertas, Razzle at millennium parties around Cape Town, go wild at our own theme park, the Ratanga Junction. Take cruises in Table Bay and to Robben Island. The season to be merry!

April and May

Take spectacular drives on the Cape's mountain passes, including Chapman's Peak, Sir Lowry's Pass, Villiersdorp and Helshoogte. Wander around the Waterfront, taking in the aquarium with its huge tanks holding predatory fish and sharks. Watch the feeding at 3:30pm! Hike up Table Mountain and take the cable car down again.

June and July

Visit the Imax theatre for virtual reality and total immersion movies! Go deep sea fishing for tunny, tuna and the elusive marlin, or simply wander down to Kalk Bay or Hout Bay harbour and bargain for a freshly caught snoek.
